Volunteers
MLC needs volunteers! Volunteers make possible many of our electives, our field trips, our school activities and our fund-raisers. They also help in classrooms, the office and at special events and serve on our PTSA, Site council and LSAC.

Contact your child's teacher or the school office if you have a skill, talent or time to share and an inclination to serve and have a good time while doing so.

Volunteers who teach classes or who have close contact with students must pass a criminal background check.

PTSA
Our Parent-Teacher-Student Association is an active and integral part of the MLC community. Its main functions are to raise money and to build community. The money assures that all MLC students, regardless of family resources, are able to fully participate in our programs including our numerous field experiences. The community building assures that we know each other, support each other and have a good time doing so.

Our PTSA meets once each month. Contact the school office for dates and times. There is also a PTSA box in the main office. Please, join and support this vital group.

Site Council
Each district school has a Site Based School Improvement Council. These councils include students, teachers, staff, parents and community members elected to serve for two-year terms. The principal is a permanent member. Site Councils have a decision-making role in determining school improvement priorities and related professional growth activities.

Our own Site Council has established the following goals:
  • To increase the percent of students in the next highest performance category and for all students to show benchmark academic growth.
  • To use a meaningful and accurate system of assessment and evaluation that promotes and captures the learning process and reflects the uniqueness of individuals.
  • To focus on character development in helping students become well-rounded citizens who contribute positively to their community.
  • To maintain stable and viable school enrollment.
Our council meets once each month. Meetings are open to general participation. Call the school office for dates and times.

LSAC (Local School Advisory Committee)
Members of our LSAC meet informally with the principal to ask questions, raise issues and provide advice in school planning. Recently the committee has addressed parking, immunizations and project activity planning.

Our LSAC meets once each month. Meetings are open to general participation. Call the school office for dates and times.

Rainbow Families
This group of families meets periodically to promote equity and to provide individual and group support within our school community.

Contact our school counselor (916-6434) for meeting dates and times.

Swimming Pool
We are pleased that our pool continues to be open. Our Kx3 students take weekly swimming lessons. Our 4x8 students swim as part of our elective program. Our 9x12 students swim as part of our PE program.

The pool is also open to community use. Check with the pool staff or call 503-823-3671 for hours of operation or to reserve it for group use.

Kids Community Learning Center
KCLC is a before and after school care program located at MLC. It is a non-profit, private, anti-bias, emergent based child-centered program that strives to create a positive focus for kids while helping them develop emotional awareness and social skills.

For more information contact Seth Goradietsky at 503-241-9443.

SUN-Community School
The city and county fund our SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) Community School Program. This program provides classes for adults, activities for students and special community programs and celebrations. Sylvia Linington, our coordinator, also schedules all after 3:00 building use activities. She can be reached at 503-916-2912.
